Things to Consider Before Getting a Puppy

When you see a puppy, it’s easy to fall in love. Their tiny size, fluffy fur, and sweet eyes make them irresistible. However, bringing a new pet into your home is a big commitment, and there are several important things to consider before taking that step.

1. Puppies Grow Up Fast

Just like children, puppies don’t stay little for long. Miniature Schnauzers typically reach their full size around 18 months of age. If you bring home a 3-month-old puppy, you’ll only have about 15 months of that “cute puppy stage.”

Studies show that many dogs are surrendered between 7 months and 3 years old, often because families weren’t fully prepared for the responsibilities that come with pet ownership.

2. Owning a Dog Can Be Expensive

Everyone knows raising a child can be costly — and pets are no different. Even feeding your dog a basic, healthy diet can add up, especially with rising prices. If you decide to add supplements, treats, or special foods, the cost increases even more.

Toys are another ongoing expense. Puppies need appropriate chew toys to prevent them from damaging household items. We regularly replace worn-out toys to keep our dogs happy, engaged, and safe.

Daycare is another factor to consider. If you work long hours, doggy daycare can be a lifesaver. It provides socialization, exercise, and peace of mind while you’re away — but it does come with a price tag.

Then there are vet bills. Routine checkups and vaccinations are essential, but unexpected illnesses or injuries can be costly. Pet insurance is highly recommended to help offset these expenses, but it’s another monthly cost to plan for.

Some dogs are happy as the only pet, while others thrive with a companion — which means double the expenses. And don’t forget grooming. Miniature Schnauzers require regular grooming to prevent painful matting. We recommend professional grooming at least every three months, but your groomer can give specific advice based on your dog’s needs.

3. Time and Attention

Puppies and dogs need plenty of interaction and exercise. After a long day at work, it can be tempting to relax, but your dog will likely be full of energy and eager for your attention. Daily walks, playtime, and bonding are essential — even if your dog has a furry playmate at home.

4. A Lifelong Commitment

Puppies are a joy, but they are also a serious responsibility. Every dog deserves love, care, and a forever home. Please never abandon your pet. Most animals left on the side of the road cannot survive on their own.
